I found Frase on Appsumo and after learning as much as I could about what it offered I decided to get the deal and give it a spin.

I won’t leave you hanging to know what I think > I am glad I tried it and I like it!

Listen – there are a ton of tools out there, some great – some not so great. I promise guys, I will ALWAYS be honest with my thoughts.

But remember my experiences may not mirror yours.

Take for instance how some people love SEMrush over Ahrefs (I personally like the Ahrefs user interface so much better and always go back to it) – a lot of what we like is personal. Just the difference in dashboards and how they are laid out can make you love or hate a program.

With that said – always TEST for yourself before making any purchase.

Below is my experiences and a full Frase review. I have been working with it for just a few days so still have a lot to learn – but am already in love and plan on making it a crucial part of every piece of content I create!

See why I think you should too.

What Is Frase?

Frase is a tool that can help you improve your SEO and user engagement by helping you find content ideas that answer the questions your readers have about a specific topic.

It will deliver to you a collection of topics, questions, resources and content ideas to help you create a new article easily.

Your current content workflow may be something like this (which is actually my workflow):

  1. Decide on a topic and find the main keyword.
  2. Manually input the keyword into Google.
  3. Look at the top 10 competitors – view the title tag, the meta description and then click through every page to see what their structure is like to get a baseline.
  4. Go to Quora, Reddit and relevant forums to find questions people are asking.
  5. Review the Google results for people also asked and related queries.
  6. Compile the data and plan your content outline.
  7. Write and publish.

To do all of this for a typical post of 1,500-2,000 may take me about 3-4 hours. That is an awful long time.

So, how does Frase speed up my content creation? Well, let me show you!

What Can Frase Help You With?

Frase is meant to help you improve and create new content. When you get started you will have a few options:

  • Create a new content brief to give to your writers or create a new content piece that you will write yourself
  • Optimize existing content – simply enter a URL of an existing page and Frase will import all the content for you
  • Create new content with a template – Frase templates currently include Featured snippet, Pillar page and FAQ template

Frase overview

When I enter the keyword I am targeting into Frase it delivers everything I noted above in my manual workflow right into the interface for me to review. No scouring the search results or forums to find content ideas, it is all right there for me to pick and choose what to use!

In the example below I input the keyword term “namecheap vs godaddy” to write content about.

In the left area you will add/write your content.

In the right area are all the resources and inspiration that are available to you to create your content around your selected keyword/phrase.

Below the image I will add a brief summary of each tabbed section so you know what to expect.

edit screen in frase

Overview

This tab gives a general overview of everything the top results are delivering in terms of metrics, user intent, topics and more.

Selecting your competing pages!

The only action to take on this page is narrowing down the source pages you are comparing against. You want to make sure you are using pages that are most related to what you will write about. (Example: if you are writing a top 10 product blog post, you will not use Amazon or a retailer page to compare against)

Below are the steps to pick the pages you want to use to find content ideas.

  1. Click the edit button to the right of the “processed sources” section as shown below.

choose source pages

2. Uncheck any pages that are shown that do not fit the scope of the content for the keyword you creating content for. I typically stick 10 pages to compare against so I will actually click Top 10 at the top and then refine from there.

3. Click save. The tool will now adjust all the metrics and you can now move on to begin writing your content.

SUMMARIZE CONTENT >>> DO NOT STEAL CONTENT

When using Frase it is important to make ALL content your own! Because you can add snippets from other websites does not mean you can use it – that is stealing. Please use it to INSPIRE you to write your own content.

Summaries

This section will show you an actual summary of each of the pages you have chosen to show for your keyword. This is where a lot of the magic happens.

For the term I added for this post example – the top page ranking comes from winningwp.com and in the image below you can see a summary of the content of the page as shown in Frase.

What are the important take aways in the image?

  1. The content of their page is 1900 words
  2. You can easily see the pages heading tags which is an important part of optimization.
  3. Each heading area you can click on and see a summary of the section. It does not show ALL the content from their page but a summary of it.

So you can review all the summaries from every page to decide what you want to include in your new post.

Adding content to the editor is easy!

  • To add a heading to your content editor just click on the little icon to the right of title.
  • When you click on a heading to view on the summary for the heading, just click on a paragraph to add it to your content area – meaning you can pick and choose pieces from all different pages that rank.
  • At the bottom of the summary there are three green buttons. Add to document will add the OUTLINE of the summary to your content area, Open Link will open the page in a new tab and blacklist allows you to exclude page from being analyzed if you find the content is not relevant.

My Workflow For Using Summaries

  1. Review the summaries for the top pages.
  2. Add the headings I want to use to my content editor and rewrite them to “make them my own”.
  3. Go through the content in the headings that are relevant to the ones I selected for all the top ranking websites and click on the text I am most interested in to add it to my content area under the appropriate heading.
  4. Rewrite the content to “make it my own”.
  5. Move on the Topics section to further optimize my content.

Topics

Congratulations – you have now moved on to the topics area! At this point you may have a good base for your content and now want to improve it. This is where topics come in.

Topics are terms and phrases you can use that are highly relevant to your main keyword which may help you improve your ranking.

Let’s see how to use this section!

  1. Topic score is an average of topical relevancy among the top pages. My content is currently at 25.4%, and the yellow line represents everyone else has an average of 44.5% – so I have some work to do. You want to be past that yellow line!
  2. You can use advanced filters to sort the topics by type (multi-word, single word etc.), sort (sources or average mentions) and status (overuse topic gap etc.)
  3. By default the list is shown in order of importance.
  4. Yellow is under optimized, green is optimized, red is over optimized and grey means you are not using the term at all. So you will want to go through and IF IT MAKES sense use the terms it is recommended until the term goes great.
  5. You can click on each term to see how other top pages are using the term in their content for inspiration. Just like summaries you can click to add the content to your page and adjust it as needed.
  6. Use the View All Scores link to see how competitors are doing and use the Download link if you want to export the words to a spreadsheet.

Questions

The questions area will show you common questions found on the top results. Just like other options above you can open the question and see a summary of the content and add any pieces you would like to the editor.

Links

The links section will help you see what external and internal links your competing pages are using.

For the external links you are seeing pages that the top pages are linking out to – this is a great way to find authority sites to link to about your topics.

For internal links you are seeing links that your competitors are linking to within their own websites with the anchor they are using.

In the example below you can see the first external link shown is Namecheap – this is telling me that some of the top pages are linking to Namecheap and which pages are being linked to.

This is a great way to add more relevant information into your content that your readers may find usable.

Stats

Because what is content with important statistics? The statistics are will provide any relevant statistics about your topic that you can add to your content at the click of a button – but then of course change the text to make it your own!

In the below example we can see that makeawebsitehub.com is showing a statistic that 30 percent of domain are registered through GoDaddy. (See how I rewrote what they wrote!)

So now you can easily view a variety of options for adding important data to your post.

News

Adding recent news about your topic can be really beneficial too! In the news section you will find a list of topic relevant news that you can add to your content or dig deeper into by clicking the Summarize button to show the news summary.

Once you view the summary you can easily add pieces of the article into your post – then either credit it to the original news article or rewrite it.

My New Worflow With Frase

I figured I would try simplify everything above in an easy list! This is how I will approach writing a new piece of content with Frase.

  1. I use Ahrefs to find a keyword opportunity. You can use Keysearch, SEMrush or any other tool – I just prefer Ahrefs.
  2. Go to Frase and click New Document – enter my keyword in the search query box, make sure content brief is checked – click create document.
  3. I use Overview to edit the list of websites I want to compare my website against (removing any websites that may not be similar to mine) – I usually choose the websites in the top 10 only.
  4. Go to summaries and review the top pages. Review the headings, the summaries under the heading and then click and add those items to my document I am most interested in talking about.
  5. I rewrite all the content I just added to make it my own.
  6. I then go to topics and see where I need to add or delete topical words to maximize my score and optimization. I only add keywords that make sense – do not just add them because Frase says so – it has to make sense with your content.
  7. Go to links and see if there are any external links I can add that would benefit my readers.
  8. Go to stats and see if there are any additional stats I can add that my readers my find helpful.
  9. News – just to make sure there is nothing new in my topic that I can talk about or add which is a great way to make your content better than your competitors.
  10. Add my images
  11. Make sure my topic score and number of words are inline with the others
  12. Copy and paste into WordPress – fix formatting and publish.

At first glance it might look creating content is more steps with Frase, but trust me it is not – and it is a whole lot easier than my original workflow!

Other Features Frase Offers

Below are a few other features that Frase offers that I have not had a chance to fully test out yet, but wanted to let you know about because they are great add-ons to a pretty powerful tool!

  • Answers is an AI chatbot you can use on your website automatically answer visitor questions.
  • Question Ideas is an area where you can input a keyword and Frase will return a collection of questions being asked in Google Autocomplete, People Also Ask. forums and more.
  • Google Traffic allows you to integrate Search Console data into Frase where you can see an overview of how you are doing and actions you can take to improve existing content.
  • Concept map allows you to input your keyword and view various Wikipedia pages to find topics and more!

Frase Pricing & Free Trial

Frase offers a free trial that allows you to create 5 documents so you can test it out.

Like I mentioned above – there is a bit of a learning curve, but I think with a 5 document trial you should get enough of the experience to make your decision!

The base price is $39.99 a month for 30 documents – which for the time you will save in creating content is a great price. You can do month to month and cancel at any time.

Final Thoughts

Would I personally recommend Frase? Yes.

Do I find value in it? Yes.

Is the price fair for the value? In my opinion yes.

For a new tool, I think Frase is amazing and I look forward to running it through some more tests soon.

I created my first full post with Frase a few days before I wrote this post.

The post was 1410 words, completely done with Frase – took me about 1.5 hours to create and the next day I was ranking at position 11. I will monitor this of course as sometimes new content can skip around – but overall, the cut in my content creation time alone makes it worth it to me.
