Spring cleaning isn’t just for your house or apartment—it’s also a great time to take care of the clutter that’s built up on your church or nonprofit’s website.

If you’re unsure of where to start, today we’ll discuss 3 easy ways to start the cleanup process.

Why is cleaning your website important?

Over time and use of your website, aspects of your website can become outdated and collect ‘junk’ (like old pictures and content) that fill up your site. This can affect your page load speed, SEO, and overall quality of your site.

Cleaning out and updating your website keeps your site working properly and ensures optimal user experience.

1. Delete Excess Photos

We all do it—add image after image to our website whether they get used or not. Or, we initially use the images, but somewhere along the way the page or post they’re on gets deleted, but the images are still hanging out in your media library.

It’s important to periodically check your media library and delete images that you know are no longer being used. You may be able to find a WordPress plugin to delete unused images for you, but make sure you have a recent backup of your site stored in case something goes wrong.

2. Update Plugins, Themes, and Core

Your website actually needs to be updated frequently, not just in the springtime. However, now is a great time to start consistently doing it.

With a WordPress site, the WP core, theme, and plugins all need to be updated regularly to ensure optimal performance of your site. However, you must be careful when doing these because some updates can negatively affect your website. Make sure you have a recent backup of your site that you can revert back to if something goes wrong.

Updates like these fall under the category of website maintenance. Website maintenance plans can also include the backups we’ve discussed, security, monitoring, and more. You can learn more about what Yemba Digital offers in our maintenance plan and pricing article.

3. Fix Outdated Content

As a website visitor, nothing is worse than reaching a website and seeing outdated content that is no longer relevant. You need to keep your church or nonprofit’s website content updated to best connect with your website visitors.

This may include:

  • Taking off old events that already happened.
  • Staffing changes – Whether taking off or adding new faces.
  • Keeping those staff bios up-to-date
  • And more!

Having up-to-date content will both provide a better user experience and help with your site’s SEO.
